Cattle Raiding – Dinka Gok As the civil war continues in other parts of the Country, Lakes State, South Sudan has remained relatively unscathed. Lakes however endures its own conflict of inter tribal skirmishes fuelled by munitions left over from the first civil war. Cattle raids and the cycle of revenge attacks have claimed thousands of lives in South Sudan since independence in 2011. To the clans of Lakes State cattle are the main source of wealth and pride, playing a vital role in marriage arrangements, with young men having to provide increasingly larger numbers of cattle as dowries. I spent a week with some of the Dinka Gok clans in Cueibet County documenting their unique culture and way of life.
